Bushcraft…What Is The Buzz About???

Bushcraft is one of the earliest recognized wilderness skills preparation and outfitting businesses in The United Kingdom. The business was started in 1996 after recognizing a need for good natured and pleasant wilderness skills training, combined with a well-sourced delivery of high quality and methodically tested tools, specific to the needs of Bushcraft and back country adventures.

Bushcraft is essentially the name given to the skills that are required or are needed for a person to survive in the wilderness. This includes the skills to hunt wild animals, birds or fish for the sake of survival. The term ‘Wilderness craft’ has an American and Canadian origin. This term is now replaced by Bushcraft. Bushcraft is a vanishing art but it definitely works when other activities fail to give you benefits.

Unique Bushcraft kit

At the time bushcraft started, some of the kit just couldn’t be purchased. Bushcrafters either ended up constructing himself the knives or designing a variety of items and having them made to his own demanding specifications. Bushcrafters always have a preference for natural materials and, wherever probable, has tried to source goods close to their origin and have them locally made. This has led to a compilation of highly regarded outdoor products that are practical, ethical and reliable.

A bush crafter should always have following tools or skills for better survival:

Ø  The Blade

A cutting blade is a very significant Bushcrafter component and it is as necessary for Bushcraft as the sword is to a warrior or teeth and claws are to the Lion and other carnivore animals.  It is the most simple to handle tool for stabbing or cutting.

Ø  Fire craft

Fire craft is the art of making fire under any condition. It is necessary part of Bushcraft survival.  There are many ways to build a fire; a fire drill, flaming plants and trees, sunlight, striking rocks and matches and lighters.

Ø  Ropecraft

Ropecraft is the capability to join two or more pieces of a material by knots. It is a crucial skill to have for Bushcraft survival.  Ropecraft not only helps in building shelter but also in catching the prey.

Ø  4.  Hunting and Trapping

Hunting holds very important place in Bushcraft.  Skill of tracking and ropecraft leads to the ability to hunt for food by use of traps and nets. Traps are the means of saving energy and time.

Ø   Shelter

While going out on a venture, first thought comes in the mind is the set up for the living place or shelter.  Information of shelter making is a very significant aspect in Bushcraft. Type of shelter depends upon the type of environment of the place in which you are going for hunting or trapping.

Ø    Tracking

Tracking of animals and humans is another vital component of Bushcraft survival.  By following tracks made by humans and animals on the ground, Bushcrafters can get to know the patterns of the walking of the animals or humans because once a place is populated by animals; they follow the same path again.

Ø  Foraging

One cannot survive merely on animals and fish. Foraging is very important for survival. Differentiating between edible and poisonous plants is an important feature of foraging.

For bushcraft a person must know the trapping skills. Trapping of animals and birds is favored over hunting of animals and birds. Trapping saves a lot more energy as compared to hunting. If you haven’t read about trapping then certainly you are missing something fascinating.

Survival traps are easy to make. Even a ordinary person can make proficient use of survival traps. Survival traps are usually made of natural supplies.  There are different types of traps for catching different animals, birds or fishes. Traps are of different shapes, sizes and designs.

Types of traps

There are hundreds or thousands of different types of survival traps that can be used to catch or trap the wild animals.
